AI-free

This website explores software development as a craft, it's not about churning out products.

Projects are worked on slowly by hand without AI. Like practically every company these days my day-job does use Claude (for feature development) and Copilot (PR checks mainly) but other than early R&D around shaders which leaked into some personal projects (before being purged!) there's zero AI in the work here.

My social feeds are full of new audio products thrown out by people with zero history of software development (slopware). Software development is difficult, it took decades to get to the semi-proficient point I'm at now, when I started Google was just appearing, Stack Overflow didn't exist, there were no real established design patterns, certainly none that haven't since become regarded as anti-patterns. I started coding old BlackBerry 7230s and all we had was auto-generated Javadoc and a friendly developer message board hosted by RIM.

When the AI bubble bursts all this slopware will disappear, the people throwing it out into the world dont have the skills needed to maintain it. They don't have the interest either I expect, a lot of these things will be abandoned.

Writing code is enjoyable when done slowly, so it's on that basis my personal projects here will continue. There's no rush, and there's no joy in using AI to speed things up.
